FAQ on languages

Do I need to study the Finnish language in Finland?

If you apply to an English-language programme, it is not usually compulsory to study Finnish, but naturally it is advisable since it would help you a lot in your everyday life to know at least the basics of our language. Furthermore, Finnish language skills may be an important asset in finding work in Finland after your graduation.

Is Swedish also an official language in Finland?

Yes, it is. In some particular areas in Finland, situated mainly on the Western and Southern coasts, Swedish is actually predominant. Certain Finnish universities and polytechnics in these areas are Swedish-speaking institutions.

Can I get by in Finland if I only know English?

Even though English is a foreign language here, it is widely taught at schools and thus most people speak and understand English, so generally speaking you should not encounter any problems. That said, it is still a good idea to try and learn some Finnish (or Swedish) so as to feel more “at home”.

Can I first enroll in a Finnish university to study the Finnish language, and then apply for a Finnish-language degree programme?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. The universities and polytechnics do not provide any language preparation year options. Unless you are already quite fluent in Finnish at the time of application, Finnish-language study programmes are not a very realistic option. Please also note that it is not usually possible to get a student residence permit based on Finnish language studies only.
