Five Finnish universities ranked in the Academic Ranking of World Universities

Five Finnish universities appeared in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The universities listed in the ranking were Aalto University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Helsinki, University of Oulu and University of Turku.

Of these five universities, University of Helsinki reached into the top 100. Compared to 2016, University of Helsinki has moved up from the 67th place to the 56th place. University of Eastern Finland has improved its position from the 401 – 500th place to 301 – 400th place. Aalto University and universities of Oulu and Turku were ranked between 401 – 500.

ARWU ranks universities by broad subject fields. Finnish universities succeeded in all of the five broad subject fields: Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Life and Agriculture Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, Engineering and Computer Sciences and in Social Science.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy and it ranks 500 universities annually. ARWU uses the following indicators to rank universities:

  • the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • the number of highly cited researchers
  • the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science
  • the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index
  • per capita performance
