Polytechnics provide professional higher education
Polytechnics are also known as Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS). Polytechnic education emphasises close contacts with business, industry and the service sector, especially at the regional level.
Polytechnic degrees are designed to meet the changing requirements and developmental needs of the working world by having a pronounced occupational emphasis and by producing qualified graduates for various professional duties. They confer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. In English they provide some 100 Bachelor’s degree programmes and over 20 Master’s degree programmes.
There are 25 polytechnic institutions operating under the Ministry of Education and Culture (27, if the Åland Polytechnic in the self-governing province of the Åland Islands, and the Police Academy are included), most of which are multi-field and operate in several locations.
