Bachelor's programmes
Polytechnics (universities of applied sciences) provide 100 Bachelor’s degree programmes in 8 fields of study, whilst only 2 universities provide Bachelor-level degree education. Polytechnics give professional higher education with a strong emphasis on the requirements and development of working life.
At polytechnics the Bachelor’s degree consists of core and professional studies, optional studies, practical training, and a Bachelor’s thesis. The degree is worth 210 – 270 ECTS credits and the duration is from 3.5 – 4.5 years.
The compulsory on-the-job training period is equivalent to a minimum of 30 credits. Apart from acquainting students with their future profession, it enables them to combine their degree work with hands-on job experience and an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice.
Communication and language studies are also included, i.e. studies in the native language, in the second official language and in one or more foreign languages.
At universities a Bachelor’s degree consists of basic and intermediate studies, language studies, and a Bachelor’s thesis. The degree is worth 180 ECTS credits, and the duration is 3 years.
