Finnish Universities gain high positions in THE 2023 Impact Rankings

Five Finnish universities made it to top 100 in the individual categories of the recent annual sustainable development goals rankings.

The Times Higher Education Impact Ranking assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to an overall ranking table, the THE Impact Ranking looks at each of the 17 SDGs separately.

Ranking by separate SDG’s

This year, Finnish universities were ranked among the top 100 in the following individual categories (= denotes a shared position):

  • Zero hunger (SDG 2)
    =86 University of Jyväskylä
    =88 University of Helsinki
     
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)
    #94 University of Oulu
     
  • Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11)
    #50 University of Helsinki
     
  • Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12)
    #15 LUT University
    #48 University of Eastern Finland
    #84 University of Jyväskylä
     
  • Climate action (SDG 13)
    =22 University of Eastern Finland
    =26 LUT University
    #54 University of Jyväskylä
     
  • Life below water (SDG 14)
    =82 University of Jyväskylä
     
  • Life on land (SDG 15)
    #72 University of Jyväskylä
     
  • Peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16)
    =38 University of Helsinki

Several other Finnish universities also made it to top 200 in various SDGs.

Overall SDG Impact Ranking

The overall ranking included almost 1,600 universities from 112 countries/regions. LUT University was the most successful Finnish university, being included in the top 200 range.
